The most paranoid band ever. When England went to Falkland war, Jaz Coleman went to Iceland and expected Armageddon there. Later on he studied Egyptology or something.
Pandemonium is 1994. It starts with the sound of a brass instrument thats at least 4000 years old. Youre fascinated for a while but then you watch out because the song comes at you like...like an Oliphant. One repetitive guitar riff by the most malicious guitar player ever, Geordie. No, wait, its at least three repetitive guitar riffs, cascading down simultaneously for 8 minutes. Shimmering and oriental, like Jimmy Page in Kashmir mood, only this isnt going to Kashmir, this is going to the fall of Babylon.
Or rather, provoking it.
If you want a tribal beat, then first try The Drummers of Burundi but next is Killing Joke. If you want some political sarcasm, angry and confrontational, try Jaz Coleman. Kiss the arse of Uncle Sam / Oh to be an Englishman (from their last album, the Iraq war dawning) isnt exactly subtle, but sometimes its like Oscar Wilde said, If I see a spade, I call it a spade. He can get more subtle, to the point of esoteric mysticism. But hes on the warpath, you know, and this isnt about fishnet shirts, its about ritual masks.
Their sound is a unique blend of primitive violence and weird, strangely beautiful, haunting melodies. This band sounds like no other. They can be bad, really bad, but when theyre good theyre the most intense band, usually coming out of nowhere after the last apocalypse, thrashing their way through all the rest.
Well it had to be said one time.
