The paper scrutinizes the harsh techniques used by the CIA under the Bush administration through the lens of neurobiology. Researchers concluded that the harsh methods were biologically counterproductive to eliciting quality information because prolonged stress harms the brain's ability to retain and recall information.
- Health Insurance Premiums Up 131%, And Still Climbing The Kaiser Family Foundation's 11th annual survey found that the average family premium for health insurance rose to $13,375 last year, a jump of 5% even as inflation fell .7%. That makes for an obscene rise of 131% over the past ten years, during which time wages increased only 38%. One more time: public option, anyone? Even better; single payer!
- Quagmire Redux Mr. President, We ask once more: Given the latest casualty figures, public opinion polls, Congressional rumblings and dire warnings from your top military leaders of "mission failure" (whatever that constitutes that hasn't already happened) - given all this, surely it's time to rethink Afghanistan?
- The Yes Men Say "We're Screwed!" We love the Yes Men. Now they've blanketed New York City with one million hoax New York Posts - thanks to 2000 activist volunteers - shrieking about the coming calamity of climate change, deadly heat waves, extreme flooding and all. They pulled off their latest very cool, hopefully eye-opening stunt one day before a UN summit set to address global warming. The paper's fake, the facts are real, and scary.
- Obama The Impotent Much hope has been invested in Barack Obama's ability to strike a new course for the US following eight years of Bush administration unpopularity. Yet many in the US and abroad are impatient with the pace of progress under the Obama administration.
[For example] ...on the campaign trail, Barack Obama promised to reverse the Bush administration's terrible ecological record. Yet so far the world has seen more symbolic gestures from the Obama administration than accomplishments. Its biggest achievement so far has been an example of disappointment. President Obama signed an executive order to increase US motor vehicle mileage standards - but only to a level that will push fuel efficiency by 2020 to a level that European and Japanese cars reached several years ago, and even China has already achieved.
- VIDEO: Liberals Want Government Regulation FOR A
GOOD REASON; Conservatives Want NO Government Regulation, Because They're IDIOTS A good clip from the
Rachel Maddow show explaining how government regulation is actually a good thing, despite the republicans constantly saying that "government and
regulation is bad". Here we see how government regulation in the auto industry forced the auto makers to make cars safer (something the auto makers
fought against very hard until the government forced them to act, which the help of people like Ralph Nader). If the republicans had their way corporate
America would decide if they wanted to make safe products.
