TODAY'S HEADLINES, 12/1/09 *** President Obama has issued orders to escalate the war in Afghanistan by sending between 30,000 and 35,000 additional troops. On top of previous reinforcements sent earlier this year, the troop buildup will nearly triple the US military presence in Afghanistan that President Obama inherited when he took office *** Protests are being planned for tonight outside West Point, the site of President Obama's speech. On Monday representatives of 34 antiwar groups delivered an open letter to President Obama strongly opposing his decision to escalate the war. Meanwhile in Afghanistan many residents have expressed opposition to Obama's war plans, citing the fact that the US has killed countless civilians, essentially creating the very "enemy" they claim to be fighting against *** Iraqi officials are reporting incidences of cancer, deformed babies and other health problems have risen sharply since the US-led invasion in 2003.
